If you have been anywhere near a twentyfirst century teenager, or maybe even played a game or two yourself, then you will know what cheat codes are. Just in case you don’t: a cheat code is a shortcut or safety switch consisting of a code which is entered during game play. Typically a cheat code will get you out of danger, make you unkillable or grant you powers that allow you to win without much effort.
Originally cheat codes were programmers shortcuts that allowed them to test gameplay quickly and effortlessly while designing and debugging new games. Of course some of these cheats leaked out and gamers began using cheats to pass difficult levels or otherwise modify their gameplay. Eventually a whole industry and subculture grew up around cheat codes.
Of course, using cheat codes is still considered uncool, even though cool people do it in the privacy of their own homes.
Anyway, aside from giving you a gamers history lesson, I wanted to let you know about a cool tool I found that is a kind of “Cheat Codes for Writers” that has collected 1001 character quirks that you can use to add depth and dimension to your fictional creations.
Of course you could just create your own set of character cheat codes, given enough time, and you probably should do that anyway. However there are a few reasons why you should seriously consider buying this collection.
- It saves you lots of time
- The character quirks may be outside your experience or comfort zone
- A fresh perspective may be just the spark you need
- Its cheap!
